HSK 4 Vocabulary Guide Grammar Spine & Exam Traps
HSK 4 is the level where "I can order food" turns into "I can explain why I ordered it." The vocabulary doubles, but the bigger jump is in nuance: near-synonyms, formal vs informal registers, and longer sentence structures.
Overview
HSK 4 contains 1006 core words under HSK 3.0. The exam adds a short essay section and listening passages with more than one speaker. At this level, simply knowing the English translation of a word is no longer enough. You need to know which of two near-synonyms fits the grammar of the sentence, and you need to recognize tone sandhi in connected speech.
Core Grammar Points
1. Potential Complements (可能补语)
Insert 得 or 不 between the verb and the result complement to express "can / cannot": 看得见, 听不懂, 打不开. This pattern appears constantly in listening comprehension because it changes the rhythm and tone of the phrase.
2. Complex Sentences with 虽然...但是...
Concessive clauses are a hallmark of HSK 4 writing. The most common error is using both 虽然 and 但是 in the same sentence correctly but placing the subject in the wrong clause. Remember: the subject usually sits after 虽然 if the two clauses share the same subject.
3. Passive "被"
被 sentences are required at HSK 4 but many learners avoid them. Practice converting active sentences to passive: 猫吃了鱼 → 鱼被猫吃了. The key rule: 被 sentences must feel complete. A bare 被 + Verb is usually too short and sounds odd.
4. Relative Clauses with 的
Attributive clauses get longer at HSK 4. You will see stacked modifiers: 那个穿红衣服的女孩. Keep track of which 的 belongs to which modifier — exam reading passages often hide the main noun deep inside the clause.
Top 5 Exam Traps
Trap 1: Tone sandhi in 不 + 4th tone
When 不 precedes a 4th-tone syllable, it changes to 2nd tone. Many learners hear 不是 as "bú shì" in isolation but miss the shift in fast connected speech. Listening sections use this to separate B3 from B4 test takers.
Trap 2: Assuming words with the same English gloss are interchangeable
了解 and 知道 both mean "know" in a dictionary, but 了解 implies depth and 知道 implies awareness. At HSK 4, cloze tests deliberately place two near-synonyms as answer choices. The deciding factor is almost always grammar or register, not meaning.
Trap 3: Ignoring measure-word collocations
HSK 4 introduces abstract measure words (种, 项, 份) and requires you to match them with nouns you already know. A single measure-word mismatch can cost you a reading point.
Trap 4: Writing essays that stay at HSK 3 complexity
The HSK 4 essay prompt asks for 80-100 characters. The scoring rubric rewards complex sentences (复合句). If your essay is a list of simple SVO sentences, you will hit the word count but lose grammar points. Aim for at least two 虽然/因为/不但...而且 structures.
Trap 5: Memorizing individual words without collocations
At HSK 4, the exam tests collocations more than isolated definitions. It is better to know five collocations for 影响 than to memorize ten individual words. Build cards around verb + object and adjective + noun pairs.
How to Study These 1006 Words
Phase 1 — Recognition (Week 1-3): Split the list into three chunks of ~335 words. Review each chunk with pinyin on the front. At HSK 4, reading speed matters more than at lower levels. Do timed reading drills: 2 minutes per short passage, then answer 3 comprehension questions.
Phase 2 — Collocations (Week 4-5): For each word, write down the two most common collocations from the official syllabus. Do not invent your own — use the examples provided by CTI or reliable course books. Flashcard the collocation, not just the word.
Phase 3 — Exam simulation (Week 6): Take a full mock exam under timed conditions. After each section, identify whether the error was vocabulary (you did not know the word), grammar (you knew the word but not the structure), or speed (you ran out of time). Fix the weakest area first.
